Being a librarian, now called a Media Specialist, I have the wonderful task of helping children find wonderful books they can read over and over. Kindergartners come so excited to have a book to take home for someone to share with them. Older students come in looking for specific authors, series, or types of non fiction so they can learn about a topic. Many will say I just got a new gerbil I need a gerbil book, or dog, or cat, or horse, etc... That step in reading to learn is the greatest step of all, but for me the first steps are the most exciting.
Children loving the library and reading is very important to me as well for their growth. Think of being unable to read road signs, menus, church bulletins or any other environmental print. As an educator I want children to come to the media center to find written material that will take them away to worlds far away or long ago, to see that they aren't the only one facing a situation or finding out how a famous person became who they are. The library can be their safe place, where the cruel world can't enter and they can face it again when they are ready.
This blog, I hope, will let you enter our library world to see what is going on and how our children are growing and learning. However, if you, too, would love to enter the world of make-believe or escape from the demands of your world. Come on in!
